Teaching Others

Series: Rick Billingsly March 2011

Teaching Others
The bible teaches personal evangelism!
“Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.” (Acts 8:4)
    “Those Who?”
“how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from ” (Acts 20:20)
I believe at times we preachers miss the mark!
I have found where Paul taught more one on one than public teaching.
Teaching Others
The religion of Jesus Christ is a teaching Religion!
Andrew went to find his own brother – isn’t that the way that it ought to be?
Brethren, why don’t we do that?
How do we go about teaching others?
What is evangelism anyway?
Teaching Others
The Preparation of doing personal evangelism
“For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10)

The Preparation of doing personal evangelism
“For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10)
Before we can tell others about Christ, we have to prepare our hearts – we need to be obedient ourselves.
    1 Peter 3:15 – “sanctify Christ in your heart…”
2 Timothy 2:15- “study to show thyself approved unto God…”

   Practice what we preach!
“You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men.” (2 Cor. 3:10)
People can tell if you are a phony!
Teaching Others
We need the proper attitude.
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls.” (Pro. 11:30)
What is your attitude toward the lost?
I would like to do an acrostic of the word evangelism!
E – Endurance
We need to understand when we do personal evangelism that we must have endurance.
Not everyone we try to teach will listen!
    Luke 8:11-15
Teaching Others
There is an old saying, “our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.”
Remember, not everyone obeyed Christ, or heeded to His teachings!
We need the endurance of the Old Texas Boy!
V – Value of the soul
     The soul is eternal
“For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Corinthians 5:1)
Teaching Others
“For we know that if the earthly which is our house is torn down, we have a from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Corinthians 5:1)
Tent – skenos, which means tabernacle, temporary place to dwell.
Building – oikodome, meaning solid structure!
The soul is so much more important than our bodies!
“For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul?...” (Mat. 16:26) Jesus took time out for individuals!
Teaching Others
A – Able
Our responsibility is determined in part, by our abilities.
“And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

A – Able
Our responsibility is determined in part, by our abilities.
“And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
Four generations of God’s people are mentioned in this text:
Paul, Timothy, “faithful men,” and “others.”
Teaching Others
Every Christian is qualified to teach!
There are different degrees of teaching, but, if you are a Christian you should know how to teach one how to become a Christian.
Knowledge does not come cheap! (Homer Hailey)
N – Now is the time to begin
Too often we intend to do personal evangelism!
If we are not careful we will be in the class of them whom Jesus said, “ … for they say and do not…”
   Half minders and gonna doers!
   gonna, somebody, and someday!
We need not be like the old Indian!

Teaching Others
Old saying, “about the only thing that comes to him who waits are whiskers.”
“We must work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming, when no man can work.” (John 9:4)
   Life is short
   Death is sure
   Eternity is long
So when are we going to begin doing personal evangelism?
Teaching Others
G – Gospel must be taught!
I am worried about what comes out of the pulpit today!
We hear a lot of philosophy, feel good time material, but we need to teach the gospel!
Romans 1:16 – it is God’s saving power!
Matthew 28:18-20 – it makes disciples
Romans 10:17 – it establishes faith
    1 Peter 1:22-23
Teaching Others
E – Enthusiasm
When David fought Goliath, he ran to him!
     Every Christian must be zealous.
“Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us form every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” (Titus 2:14)
We need more enthusiastic Christians who are sold on Christianity!
We need to get excited about our Christianity!
Teaching Others
 Edward B. Butler said,
“Every man is enthusiastic at times. One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another has it for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years who makes a success in life.”
It could be that we lack personal evangelism because we lack the enthusiasm of our faith.
L – Love for the lost souls.
“The second is this, You shall love Your Neighbor As Yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mk. 12:31)
Teaching Others
If we expect the lost to be concerned about what we teach, we need to be concerned about the lost!
   Romans 9:1-3
   Do you love the lost?
Be careful how you answer that question!
Old saying, “ works not words are the proof of love.”
I – Individual responsibility
Some individual Christians don’t realize that he or she has any responsibility toward evangelism!
Teaching Others
We must warn those who have fallen away!
   James 5:19-20
It seems that everything today is done by a group or collectivity. We have gotten away from individual responsibility.
    2 Corinthians 5:9-10
S – Salvation is the result
    James 5: 19-20 – Save a soul from death!
If you have never experienced setting across the table studying with a person – you don’t know what you are missing!
The Soul is what is valuable.
Teaching Others
M – Minister
   Every Christian is a minister!
   A minister is a servant!
We need to get away from the idea that the preacher is a minister!
   Mark 10:43-45
   Conclusion:
There is a lot to the word evangelism!
