My Vote For President

My Vote For President

There are twenty-one people currently running for President. This doesn’t even include third-party candidates. Six are running under the democratic ticket and 15 running for the republican nomination. Each of these has their strengths, weaknesses, and theories on how to make America better.

Yet I cannot find myself getting 100 percent behind any of them. You can argue with me about which issues really matter, what theories make the most sense, and which person has the best character. The problem is that all I have for each of these candidates are verbal snippets from debates, factoids, and speeches. I do not know them personally. I have not sat with them for one-on-one discussions on their policies. I have not watched how they treat their wives or husbands, seen how they approach the less fortunate, or seen them in personal trials. I do not know how they will handle the stress of the Presidency because I do not know their character beyond what I can read on the Internet and hear on the television. It is hard to whole-heartedly get behind someone I do not know or trust my future to his or her decision-making ability and wisdom.

So I’ve decided to cast my vote another direction. For the office of the President of the United States of America, I vote for the only person I know can do the job well. I vote for Jesus. Think about this with me:

Jesus knows how to create good things out of nothing. Paul tells us that, “By Him, all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Col 1.16). He knows our world and what is best for our world because He created our world. He knows whether there is life on other planets and how our planet came to be so He can decide the fate of NASA. He knows when life begins and whether it is okay to fund Planned Parenthood so He can decide. He knows the future so He knows which ruler to overthrow and which country to pressure. He knows which war is just and which is misguided. While I have opinions on these issues, He knows the answer. I trust Him.

Jesus knows how to run a country. He even knows how to run the world since He has done it since the beginning of time. “He is before all things and in Him all things hold together” (Col 1.17). He has held our country together and kept it from falling apart, even without being President. I say we give the title officially and let Him continue doing what only He can do. Let’s let Him keep our country strong.

He has functioned as the head of the longest-lasting and largest organization the world has ever known. “He is also head of the body, the Church” (Col 1.18a). The Church started as a ragtag group of men with a sermon and a few miracles. It has turned into the single largest organization (1/3 of the world population if you use the term “Christian” loosely) and kept this organization running for almost 2,000 years. He clearly knows leadership. Let’s let Him lead.

He has proven His ability to think of creative solutions to problems. We suffered with the problem of sin and He provided the answer. He “reconcile[d] all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Col 1.20). He saw a problem needing fixing and provided the only solution possible. He sacrificed for our benefit. He has the answers to every problem in this world. I say we let Him give us our answers.

So I’ll even take this a step farther. Instead of voting for Him for President, I will even accept Him as King. He is my King. He is my Lord. I will follow Him anywhere and trust in Him for anything. He should lead our country. If we follow any other, then we have gone the wrong direction. Only the Creator knows best how to rule the creation. Only He makes the perfect Leader. My vote is for Jesus.
